Sony’s connected BRAVIA HDTVs score Netflix streaming, PS3 left in the cold

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

It’s with mixed emotions that we present to you Netflix’s latest partnership with Sony, which is awesome, but could be so (so!) much more. Today, the world’s leading online movie rental service inked a deal that’ll bring instant Netflix streaming to Sony BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs this fall along with older BRAVIA models that are compatible with Sony’s BRAVIA Internet video link module. Sadly, the PlayStation 3 is glaringly absent in the announcement, which is a golden opportunity missed in our humble estimation. Ah well, at least there’s PlayOn, right? Full release is after the break.

SCEA’s Lempel says Sony isn’t playing "catch up" with Xbox Live

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

Sony’s been out there touting its PlayStation Network user numbers for some time now, but it looks like it’s now ratcheting up the rhetoric when it comes to the actual user experience as well. Taking the lead on that front is Sony Computer Entertainment America’s director of PlayStation Network Operations, Eric Lempel, who recently told Industry Gamers that Sony doesn’t think “there’s a lot of ‘catch up’ [with XBL] anymore,” adding that, “in some cases, I think we’ve got more, and we’ve got some other things they don’t have.” Of course, he further goes on to point out that PSN is and has always been free, and he cites PlayStation Home as just one thing that distinguishes PSN from Xbox Live, adding that he doesn’t “see a lot of things they’re doing that we’re not.”. Your move, Microsoft.

Sony’s newest remote control ships with a Z200iR compact music system (updated)

July 1st, 2009 Rob No comments

It’s not often that a remote control becomes the centerpiece of a product launch, but man, would you look at that. That’s the remote for Sony’s NAS-Z200iR, a WiFi-enabled shelf audio system with slot-loading CD and iPod dock. The Z200iR is DLNA-certified so it works with any DLNA device in your home including NAS boxes and of course, your PC or Mac. The re-chargeable remote features a 3.5-inch LCD display that gives you full control over sourced media including Internet radio, integrated AM/FM tuner, or devices connected via the Z200iR’s USB or audio-in ports. The sound comes courtesy of a pair of independent, 20-watt speaker enclosures with double neodymium magnets used to drive the bass. A simpler, WiFi-less CMT-Z100iR system will launch first in July with the Z200iR headed to Europe in mid September. Sorry, no prices announced so no joy.

Update: Ready for the pricing? The German press release has the Z200iR at €699. That’s nearly $1,000 for a compact sound system that sits on a shelf. Way to go Sony, way to go.

[Thanks, Daniel O.]

Sony OLED Walkman on sale now

July 1st, 2009 Rob No comments

Well, we can think of at least one 13-year-old kid who’ll welcome this next bit of gadget news: it looks like Sony’s OLED Walkman is now on sale over at the Sony Style site. As previously guesstimated, the 16GB model is moving for a cool $299.99, and the 32GB model is priced at $399.99. Order today from Sony and it ships tomorrow, or order from Amazon and it ships on July 3rd. Either way, it’s time to start counting out your pennies.
