Video: Toshiba TG01 officially exclusive to Orange UK

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

Orange has come out this morning, in advance of the official UK unveiling of the phone, to confirm it will be the exclusive UK carrier of the TG01. We can confirm availability from July 10 (i.e. tomorrow), and the phone can be had for free on a 2-year contract costing £39.15 per month. To figure out if that sort of investment is worth it, we’ll have an intrepid reporter stationed at this afternoon’s event, who’ll be bringing you up-to-the-minute details and imagery of the first Snapdragon handset to hit British shores. You’ll find the full PR at the read link, or continue reading for an unshaven Orange rep walking you through the phone’s specs.

Video: Epson and 3M create the 0.3-mm spokesmodel, eating disorders skyrocket

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

The technology behind this display might not be new, but the approach to demonstrating it is absolutely captivating. Good thing too because the idea here is to combine Epson’s rear-projection technology with 3M’s 0.3-mm thin Vikuiti film to project talking avatars on shop windows in a bid to lure lusty nerd-boys and impressionable Cosmo-girls in for a closer look. Check it after the break courtesy of Impress.

Samsung’s 250GB SpinPoint N3U has on-board USB, personal bonus card

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

It may not be the first 1.8-inch hard disk we’ve seen pushing a 250GB capacity, but damn if Samsung doesn’t know how to market its tech. See, these drives are small as Samsung skillfully demonstrates by photographing its new Spinpoint N3U disk in front of a credit card. And by including a native PATA to USB controller on the circuit board, Samsung has helped manufacturers eliminate a bit bulk from future portable USB disk offerings. The 3,600rpm drive itself features 125GB per platter, 8MB of cache, and should be capable of withstanding drops from about 20-inches. At least it will when these begin shipping in mid-July for about $200.

Seidio Palm Pre battery adds more staying power, retains slim figure

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

Admit it, your 1150mAh stock Palm Pre battery is far less than stellar — it’s okay, we won’t tell anyone. In fact, you can pick up an even larger, 1350mAh battery from Seidio that manages to keep the same physical proportions as its predecessor, meaning no dead giveaway / gaudy bulge the back of the phone. Ideally, that’d get ya an almost twenty percent bump in usage, but we doubt it pans out so nicely in field testing. Feel free to find out for yourself, it’s on sale now for a cool $45.

Apple recalls faulty first generation iPod nano players in Korea

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

While Apple may have moved on to selling the 4th generation iPod nano, consumer protection agencies are still focused on gen-1. For good reason too, apparently, as there’s mounting evidence that those early white and black plastic players have a tendency to overheat, swell, and possibly burst into a nasty chemical fire. Responding to four formal consumer complaints made between December and June, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards sent a request to Apple on June 25th recommending that Apple “aggressively” collects first generation iPod nano with Lithium Ion batteries made by the Chinese company ATL. Initially, Apple agreed to replace faulty units as they did in Japan upon request by the consumer. However, KATS is now reporting that Apple will recall the players under its own initiative making this the first formal iPod nano recall we can, uh, recall.

The Daily Roundup: here’s what you might’ve missed

Google announces Chrome OS, coming to netbooks second half of 2010
We can’t believe it’s actually here, but after hearing whispers of a Google OS for what seems like ages now, the company’s now gone official with its plans.
myTouch 3G hands-on (with video!)
While it’s great to see T-Mobile’s next Android phone all official and everything, there are certainly few surprises for those of us already familiar with the HTC Magic / Google Ion.
Sony Ericsson Rachael UI video leaks out, Kiki comes for the ride
Just like HTC’s layered the Sense UI over Android on the Hero, the Rachael looks to have a polished custom Sony Ericsson interface over its Android build, and we’re definitely digging the vibe.
Other news of import

Engadget goes behind the Dolby logo
With AV software and hardware alike carrying at least one Dolby logo, not to mention the presence of that same branding on big screen cinema, Dolby is truly a household name.
Sprint no longer selling Pre over the phone
We’re told the move is being made so that the carrier “can focus inventory in sales channels where customers have the best opportunity to experience Ready Now.”

Google names Chrome OS compatriots, Dell noticeably absent

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments — according to the latest Chrome OS update from Google, you’re looking at the company’s initial ragtag team of co-conspirators for its entry into the operating system business. With Adobe’s involvement, we can assume Flash support is a given, and the others unsurprisingly run the gamut of netbook and smartbook players. We can’t help but notice a couple of conspicuous absences on that list, including Intel and Dell. With Intel, you don’t need to partner to work on its chips, but we gotta imagine it’d help by offering more support, and as for Dell, we don’t know about that one, but there’s still plenty of time for the Big G to enlist more companies in the lead up to its second half 2010 debut.

Update: Google updated the list to include Toshiba.

HTC Hero vs. T-Mobile myTouch 3G… fight!

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

Two long lost siblings, at last reunited. But can there ever be unity? We don’t think so. At every turn, the HTC Hero seems to trounce the myTouch 3G — it’s really hardly a contest. The myTouch is certainly lighter, and in many ways “feels” smaller because of it, but the size differences really are negligible. They’re still both great phones, but the Hero really feels like a million bucks, while the myTouch feels a bit like a toy. Unfortunately, only one of them just went up for pre-order on T-Mobile, and it’s not the one we want to marry.

Mysterious cyber-attacker hits at federal websites, crisis averted?

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

It looks like a nefarious cyber-attack which affected several federal websites in the United States was a little more far-reaching than initially thought. The attack — which started on the 4th of July — targeted websites in both South Korea and the United States, including the Treasury Department, Federal Trade Commission and Secret Service. Various problems were still being reported days later, and while there’s no official word on who the attackers were, those “people familiar with the matter” we know and love seem to be pointing their fingers at North Korea. So far as we know, no irreparable damage has been done, but we’re not sure anyone would tell us if it had.

Video: Wiimote controlling a 15-ton grapple

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

We’ve seen the Wiimote used to control plenty of wild things, and to be perfectly honest, we’re pretty unimpressed with most of what we see these days. This video, however, made by an Australian with a lot of heavy equipment on hand, is truly awesome. The 15-ton grapples themselves are impressive, elegant pieces of machinery, and using Python to link the Wiimote up as controller via Bluetooth is really just icing on the cake. It’s got a sweet soundtrack, to boot! Video is after the break.
