Peek issues call for developers, yearns to build Linux-infused model

July 9th, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

Peek always has been a company for the people, with its suits sitting down late last year to listen intently to input from users regarding hacks and tweaks. Now, the outfit’s looking for a bona fide Linux guru, someone who could get Linux running on the Peek’s ARM7 processor and look suave doing it. The kicker? Should you succeed (and impress), you could score a “mini-consulting gig” with the top brass at Peek, and your work could one day revolutionize the fabled email-only handheld. Seriously, there’s nothing but fear and debilitating hesitation stopping you, so once you’re over that, hit the read link and get to work.

Python skin-covered HOON headphones likely to get PETA in an uproar

July 2nd, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

French accessories company HOON has teamed up with audio company The Perfect Unison for a line of python skin skinned headphones. The cans are made of nine layers of birch wood, lined with goat skin, and finally covered in the skin of a mighty snake for the ultimate, luxurious audiophile experience. The ear pieces are made of hand-varnished carbon fibers, presumably because the beaks of dodo birds were unavailable. These high-tech, beastly beauties will run you €1,160.00 (roughly $1,650) should you choose to make them yours.

Bridgestone set to make major push into e-paper business

July 1st, 2009 Compu-Blog No comments

Bridgestone’s already showed off some fairly impressive e-paper displays, and gone into mass production with displays for inventory tags and whatnot, but it now looks like the company is now set to make its biggest push into the market yet. According to Tech-On, Bridgestone will be announcing details of its plans in July or August, but it appears that the announcement will concern e-paper displays for e-book readers, at least one of which will be A4 in size. That particular screen was making the rounds of exhibitions back in April, and makes use of the company’s proprietary “electron powder and granular material” which, among other things, lets the screen rewrite in just 0.8 seconds. Of course, there’s no word on any actual devices using the e-paper just yet, but we’re hoping that’ll be among the details announced in the next month or so.

Kindle’s German launch stalled by T-Mobile and Vodafone?

July 1st, 2009 Rob No comments

A news item is circulating the internet reportedly from German business weekly Wirtschaftswoche claiming Amazon is facing a major hurdle in trying to bring its Kindle to Deutschland. The problem at hand? The two big wireless providers in the country, Vodafone and T-Mobile, are both saying “nein” to providing Whispernet service, and apparently the issue has to do with how much money Amazon was willing to give — unsurprising, if true. Another, very likely reason for T-Mobile’s unwillingness is that parent company Deutsche Telekom is rumored to be working on its own e-book reader, and we gotta believe those company picnics would be mighty awkward if a large subsidiary was given the competition a major boost. We can’t imagine this stopping Amazon for long, and we’d be very surprised if the Kindle didn’t find some way to sneak itself into the region sooner or later.

Olympus E-P1 hands-on, test shots, and mini-review

July 1st, 2009 Rob No comments

It goes without saying that we’ve been pretty excited about the Olympus E-P1 (or “digital Pen”) since we first laid eyes on the prototype the company was showing off. The Micro Four Thirds camera just seems to breed gadget lust amongst the staff, combining the best of modern tech with a throwback retro style that is somewhat irresistible. Of course, no one wants to drop $800 on a digicam unless it’s actually capable of taking a decent shot — so we thought we’d put the E-P1 through some basic paces to see if this guy is worth unloading nearly a grand on. Read on for some of our first impressions and observations.
